Planning and Zoning Department

The Planning and Zoning Department, a division of Community Development, uses all available means - governing laws, community knowledge, economic and demographic information, administrative skills and tools, organizational coordination and personal efforts - to help realize the vision Excelsior Springs has chosen for it's future, as embodied in its master plan, stated policies and enacted standards.

Responsibilities:

• Update and maintain the city's comprehensive plan
• Administer the zoning ordinance, subdivision regulations and flood plain regulations
• Process applications for temporary and permanent special use permits
• Review and advise on land annexation and extraterritorial services
• Provide staff services to the city council and other boards and commissions
• Review occupational licenses for zoning variances
• Review the building permit applications
